Question…

how would you start an exercise program for someone morbidly obese?

Hello. I am 28 years old, 5 foot 6 and 290 pounds. I am really wanting to try and get the weight off, but one of my problems is exercise. I simply have no stamina. I can jog for 2 minutes easier than stroll for 30 minutes. Obviously I have to start somewhere. I am on a sensible diet right now. What would you suggest to get started? I know it won’t be easy but I am ready to take the plunge. If I can manage to walk for 10 minutes and did it 2-3 times a day would that be a good start? I am as out of shape as you can get and have some sciatica issues but otherwise I am doctor approved to exercise. August 25th I start a class at the junior college where I have to keep moving in some fashion for 40 minutes (they have a fitness room which has weight equipment, treadmills, stationary bikes etc) I want to get a head start so I will be able to do the class.

This won’t count for points as it isn’t fair for the other 2 answerers as it wasn’t part of the initial question, but I did take a brisk 15 minute walk (about all I could do) this morning and I was sweating and my heart was pumping etc and I could live with all that…what made me stop is my legs started itching intensely. Any ideas how to combat this? Thanks!

Good for you! I would recommend to continue to walk 15-20 minutes, this will build up your stamina better than jogging for 2 minutes. Walk in the morning before work and then in the evening after work maybe 3-4 times a week. Start slow, drink alot of water, and remember that every step counts!

you’re doing great! you’ll work you’re way up as you get used to it, don’t worry. walk for 5 minutes and then jog for as long as you can, then go back to walking. if you feel like jogging again then do it! have a minimum set so you at least get a certain amount it. music really helps keep your mind off of how long you’re going. make sure you control your breathing. deep breathes in… then out as much as you can. the more air you get out the more you can pull back in.

Add weight training to your routine. 1. you will work and tone a lot of muscles not affected by walking or cycling. 2. weight training -> increases muscle mass -> higher metabolism -> burns more calories 24/7 -> jump starts fat loss.

Try to get advice from someone knowledgable and read books and sites like http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm so youre doing the exercises right, avoiding injury, not wasting time with too-light weights.

It is really not about what you should do, it’s about what you want to do. You can start anyway you like it, just start. If you fell tired after walking 15 minutes then reduce the amount of time. Just stay focus, and do it constantly, and without even realizing you’ll be able to do more and more everyday.

Try this:

It got me started, I hope it got you started too. Just be focus and consistent…
